Little Man update

So we turned in our application and as I posted we were told that we were going to have to wait until Kiya is home 6 months to continue. Well we got a glimmer of hope last week that we might not have to wait after all.

We got an email and our application part 2 packet in the mail so we were excited to think that we were moving forward with the paperchase. Then the call came last Friday, that nope we are in fact in a holding pattern until November. Oh well....

Could we push it? Maybe. Would it work? Probably not. Could we switch agencies? Yup. Are we going to? Nope. We picked CHSFS for a reason. We trust them. It is a good fit for our family. It may not be a good fit for other families but for us it works. Will we pay more and wait longer? Maybe. But in the end it isn't about how long you wait but how ethical is your agency. In fact I get a little suspicious of agencies that pop up with just a few months to referral. Sure it could just be that they are a new agency, totally ethically and just don't have a lot of families waiting yet. Or maybe it isn't....

Also, the time spent finding another agency and learning their system may make these extra months not worth it. Our local social worker is also very familiar with the requirements for CHSFS so we know that their won't be a delay there either.

So Little Man's paper chase will pick up again in September.

It's funny to me that you think there is a delay in little man's adoption....September is just around the corner and you will be waiting by Christmas for sure. You're on the perfect timeline to YOUR little man. No need to try to speed up!

I totally agree with what you said. I am so glad we had WH in our corner when the abandonment issue arose in Addis. We were definitely touched by it, but with the ethical way that WH handles their adoptions we had nothing to worry about.

That's not too far away! How exciting! I can't wait to see you on the waiting list for your little boy. I felt the need to state that AGCI is very ethical. The reason why the wait is shorter is because the program is smaller...there are only about 75 families on the waiting list. Each agency gets 10 court cases per month, regardles of the size of the agency. So agencies with less people on the wait list wait for shorter periods of time than agencies with many people on the wait list. I fully support you guys with CHSFS b/c they worked for you and you are comfortable with them. But I don't want the stigma going out that all agencies with shorter waits are unethical (not that you think that, but I think some people may hear that). Some agencies are more ethical than others, regardless of wait time. That is why it's so important to research, research, research. Hugs to you and your growing family Cathy! I have loved moving along on our journey together!

I can't remember the source (darn!) but last Winter when we were researching agency wait times and trying to make sense of it, we were informed that each agency has the same number of court hearings allowable each month. I am not sure the specific number, and yes I think it increased in the Spring allowing more children. I remember something about how they used to allow 10 children to be adopted each month per agency, but then it changed to 10 families each month (so sibling groups counted as 1 rather than multiple) to allow more cases getting through the courts. But regardless of how many they have right now (I would love to know that!), each agency is given the same number of cases per month in court. So that means that when you are waiting with an agency with a longer waiting list (more adoptive families ahead of you), then you wait longer for the process.

Hey, me again. :) We should meet for coffee. Haha. I actually remember my source but don't want to use her name...from CHSFS. But I couldn't find it in writing. I have emailed my AGCI case worker for more clarification. Again, I am unsure as to how many cases each agency is allowed each month in court, but was assured that each agency is represented equally regardless of the size of the agency. Therefore, if you are #50 on a wait list with a smaller agency and #350 on a wait list with a larger agency, that is why the wait is much shorter for smaller agencies. It is very frustrating to see many people in the larger agencies assume that the smaller agencies are unethical. No doubt that there are unethical agencies out there, but it has less to do with size and more to do with management...know what I mean?

Your little man will be here before you know it...and I must say, little men are quite awesome. I'm so impressed that you already have this process rolling! We may do it again (and definitely with CHSFS) but we're exhausted right now and not in the frame of mind to get started. Our little man had a rough start, but wow does he have ENERGY and is now in constant motion...and he has quite the personality! I love him. But he may have to wait a while before he has a sibling :-)

I'm going to chime in here and go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong but I think Eastiopians is confusing court cases with Embassy apt. Each agency is given 10 Embassy apt every other week. There is no limit on the court cases for an agency, those are given according to when a case is filed for court.

Congrats on starting another adoption!

It is amazing the way wait times vary. I was reading all the comments people posted, but I have to say it is amazing the wait time differences. CHFS is a great agency. I read about them and WHFC. Initially I looked into CHFS, but they won't allow singles to adopt from Ethiopia. WHFC is very ethical too... so I went with them, and I have a one year wait for a pair of siblings up to 6 years of age. The wait is killing me already because I realize how iffy the world of international adoption is... I am half tempted many days to pick an older child off the wait list because I have no clue what could happen to singles in the next year.
